The Work
Stage
Before the camera, there was the ring — and a thousand people holding their breath.
The Magician
Lead magician of a touring circus — illusions audiences compared to Cirque du Soleil.
Grace Chang’s first stage was the circus ring. As lead magician she built full-scale illusion acts — silk, fire, transformation — and learned the disciplines that no school teaches: timing measured in heartbeats, an audience read in the dark, and the showman’s contract that every seat in the house deserves wonder.
It was the family trade translated into a new language. Her father commanded laughter; Grace commanded astonishment. That same command of a room would carry her, in time, to the screen and the page.
Live Productions
Spectacle, Story,
and Silk
The Lunar New Year Spectaculars
Full-stage productions built around Chinese myth and festival tradition — the Monkey King, crane spirits, flower goddesses, and dragons the size of the proscenium. Grace writes, stages, and stars: a one-woman bridge between the theater her family built in Tianjin and the family audiences of New York.
Theater After Dark
Light as the
Second Performer
Some of Grace’s most striking stage work happens when the houselights die completely. In her blacklight productions — like the undersea fantasy Magical Ocean — ultraviolet light turns puppets into phantoms and silk into water, a form descended from Chinese shadow theater by way of the avant-garde.
In character work on stage and screen alike, she treats light the way a magician treats misdirection: as the partner the audience never sees.
The Workshop
Puppets Are Built,
Then Born
Every creature in a Grace Chang production starts as foam, rod, and fabric on a workbench. She prototypes her characters with professional puppet builders — including development work at Puppet Heap, the New Jersey studio known for its work with the world’s most famous puppet ensembles — before they ever face an audience.
Jin Jin the Dragon himself exists this way twice: as a book, and as a build — a character children can meet in person at readings and shows.
